Patients & Providers

As the demand for genetic testing within the medical field continues to grow, so does the field of genetic counseling. More than ever, genetic counselors are playing a crucial role in patient care and understanding across various specialties. Below is a link to the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) website for additional information.

What can I expect during a genetic counseling visit?

During an appointment, the genetic counselor may take a detailed family history to better understand your risk for an inherited condition. Additionally, the genetic counselor may discuss your options for genetic testing and/or the results of your genetic test.

How are genetic counselors trained?

Genetic counselors typically receive bachelor's degress in biology, social science, or a related field prior to completing specialized training. Master's degrees in genetic counseling programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC). Certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) assures that a genetic counselor has proven competency in her or his field or practice.

When should i refer a patient to a genetic counselor?

Patients can be referred to genetic counselors for various indications including but not limited to risk during pregnancy, suspicion of a genetic condition, and family history of an inherited syndrome. Genetic counselors commonly work in the prenatal, pediatric, and cancer settings.
